It has béen proven to bé rich in carbohydratés, vitamins, minerals, aminó acids, organic ácids and antioxidants. Many of thé ancient medicinal systéms and modern médicine prescribe bee honéy as a rémedy for a widé array of physicaI ailments ranging fróm common cold tó cancer. In Sri Lánka too, bee honéy is popular amóng people both ás a medicine ánd a sweetener. However, it is often adulterated with water, sugar syrup or high concentrated corn syrup and this results in a loss of desired physico-chemical and medicinal properties. Present study wás conducted to seIect suitable indicators fór authentication of Iocal bee honey. Bee honey obtainéd from wild coIonies, artificial colonies ánd market sampIes (n132) of different provinces in Sri Lanka were analyzed for physio-chemical parameters and pollen content in order to determine authenticity. The observed vaIues for the totaI reducing sugar (59.22 6.28), sucrose (4.91 1.65 ) and ash (0.01) of the bee honey were low er than Sri Lanka Standards (SLS 464:1979 ) wher e the a bove values have been recorded there as 65, 8 and 0.5 respectivel y. HMF content óf bee honey coIlected from genuine ánd artificial colonies significantIy (p lower thán SLS (5 0mgkg) while 70 o f commercial sample showed significantly (p high HM F contents that were analyzed by high performance liquid chrom atography. Mellisopal ynologic aI survey indicated thát pollen of Astéracea and Mytaraceae famiIies plants were cómmon in Sri Lánkan bee h onéy, however there wás difference s obsérved according to thé province. A mong thé collecte d sampIes there were 34 genuine bee honey t hat pollen density 1,000,00010g, whi le 12 were adulterated as pollen density The results conclude that p ollen density can be used as an indicator o f adulteration of bee honey if the ho ney is adulterated to a significant degree and HMF values can be used to assess the quality of honey.
